Company
SemiconductorsBroadcom is one of the largest semiconductor companies in the world and has also expanded into infrastructure software. Its semiconductors primarily serve computing and networking, with custom AI accelerators now accounting for the bulk of the business. It is primarily a fabless designer, but holds some manufacturing in-house, such as for its best-of-breed film bulk acoustic resonator filters that sell into the Apple iPhone. In software, it sells virtualization, infrastructure, and security software to large enterprises, financial institutions, and governments. Broadcom is the product of consolidation. Its businesses are an amalgamation of former companies like legacy Broadcom and Avago Technologies in chips, as well as VMware, Brocade, CA Technologies, and Symantec in software.
Technical signals
Based on daily closesTechnical indicators describe past price behaviour. They are not investment advice.
Short interest Short interest The number of shares that have been sold short — borrowed and sold by investors betting the price will fall — usually quoted as a share of all shares outstanding. Exchanges collect it twice a month at settlement, so the figure lags by a couple of weeks. Below about 2% is unremarkable; above 20% puts a company among the most heavily shorted on the market. It describes how much money is positioned against the company, not what the share price will do: shorts are sometimes right, and a crowded short sometimes unwinds violently upward.
Shares sold short · reported twice monthlyShort interest is reported to the exchanges at settlement, twice a month, so the headline figure lags by a couple of weeks. The daily share of volume sold short is current but noisier — much of it is market-maker hedging that never becomes a lasting position. Neither figure predicts direction.
